I am a librarian at Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, and I want to set up activities and services for people living with an intellectual disability in libraries. Do you have any special activities for this audience?
Also, do you offer sensory kit loan ?
Answer
Many Finnish libraries have easy-to-read pages in internet for example Helmet https://www.helsinginseutu.fi/hs/selkosivut-fi/vapaa-aika/kirjastot.
There are other service sites for those who need clear language for example Verneri https://verneri.net/selko/vapaa-aika/lukeminen/kay-kirjastossa/ and Papunet https://papunet.net/saavutettavuus/selkokieli-verkkosivuilla and Kehitysvammaliitto https://www.kehitysvammaliitto.fi/in-english/
The Espoo Library has people with intellectual disabilities who work part-time. They work two days a week with their supervisor.
Tasks include: shelving, unloading and rearranging.
Espoo also makes remembrance trips. The librarian has assembled briefcases and used them to reminisce together. https://www.helmet.fi/fi-FI/Kirjastot_ja_palvelut/Kalajarven_kirjasto/Tapahtumat/Muistelumatka(172275)
Library home service also helps people with intellectual disabilities bring books, movies, magazines and music home.

The Celia Library for the Visually Impaired also helps with reading difficulties. https://www.celia.fi/eng/ And they have sensory books
children with disabilities.
